While at one point Hurricane Gustav was up to a category 5, it hit the Louisiana coast at a category 3. Gustav is now a tropical depression, downgraded early Tuesday morning. Flood warnings are being issued for northern Louisiana and East Texas.
A majority of the damage took place along Louisiana's coast, where homes were destroyed and much of the low-lying parishes were flooded.
New Orleans, while it didn't escape unscathed, it certainly did not sustain the amount of damage that occurred during Katrina. Part of this is due to the improved levee system implemented since Katrina. The city's sewer system has been damaged, hospitals are working on backup power, and 80,000 homes are without power. Thankfully, the city's drinking water is still on, and the city's pumps never shut down. Much of New Orleans was evacuated, with only 10,000 people remaining behind. Those who evacuated will have to wait a little longer before they can return home, as city officials are inspecting the city for further damage.
It is unknown which oil platforms were damaged during the storm or how much damage was done. Already oil companies are scattered across the Gulf Coast assessing damage, and there are even some, who have put equipment and people back on the rigs in order to resume operations. It is expected for gas prices to rise at the pumps, although Monday, oil declined $4 dollars a barrel when Gustav weakened. Tuesday morning, oil fell $9 a barrel to $106. Does that mean it will finally fall to $3.00 a gallon...let's hope that this is just the beginning of a drastic fall in gas prices at the pump.
8 deaths in the US were attributed to Gustav, while the Caribbean saw close to 100 deaths as a result of the storm.
