According to a few Democratic Senators, new rules, called the attorney general guidelines, that have been proposed to help the FBI in catching terrorists could lead to Americans being spied on without there being any evidence or any cause of suspicion.
At the moment the rules have yet to be approved, nor have they been released to the public. The main concern about the rules is that people could become targets due to their race, ethnicity, even religion. According to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, this will not be the case, in order to open an investigation, there must be a valid reason or purpose.
Lawmakers have decided not to finalize the rules in order to give the public a chance to review them. And all requests and comments made about the laws will be reviewed. The rules do not have to have approval from Congress, and it is expected that they will be finalized sometime in the next week or so.
